Hardware , New technologies , distribution , marketing and exchange in the magazine world

Product

  • There are fewer copies of magazines being sold resulting in less being made.

  • Most magazines are now online or in app form this is affecting the sales of paper copies greatly.

  •  NME sales have gone down by 16.6%. (but website views are increasing) , NME are still reaching out to the same amount of audience if not more than they where by using the internet to market there magazine as this has become more modern and up to date.

Distribution
  • because of less paper copies being sold, distribution is less of a problem as they are no longer restricted and limited to where and how they distribute their magazines because the internet is international and can be seen everywhere and can be less regionalised.

  • Magazines still have subscriptions that  people have with them, to get the magazine delivered to their houses directly from the store house rather than having to go the shop to buy it. This can help keep the consumer loyal because they can't see other magazines while they are out buying the one they want which can stop them from finding a different magazine to buy instead.

Marketing

  • In the print magazines, the advertising inside will normally relate to the articles inside or to the magazines genre. Kerrang! for example will advertise tours, radio stations and new CD's and artists.

  • Online the adverts will relate to your searches by using cookies so the adverts will be specialised to interests and hobbies this reflects on what the customer sees advertised on youtube or social networks.

  • In free apps pop up adverts are used to advertise for related products or services this way the company will get money from the adverts or from the audience buying their full app to stop the adverts.

  • Videos online will often have adverts before the main video starts as people will watch it so that they can watch their video afterwards, this is often seen when you watch videos on youtube or itv player

Exchange

  • People will go to the shop to buy their copy of the magazine.

  •  subscriptions to the magazines is so the money will come out of their bank account.

  • Apps can be paid for to stop adverts but are often downloaded for free but the audience will spend their time rather than money.

Media ownership ( FACT Magazine )

ownership in magazines company's

if big music magazine company's such as 'Bauer Media' continue to buy out magazines smaller companies and independent companies will find it increasing harder to sell there magazines to consumers, which then will result in the smaller companies to stop producing their magazines, as there will be no market for them . whereas FACT Magazine is a good example of how a smaller company even though faced with the competition have made it in the magazine industry.

Fact Magazine:

  • FACT was made in 2003 as a british music and youth culture magazine which was sold monthly.

  • in 2005 FACT went digital

  • in 2009 FACT became exclusively an online magazine, after the website status overtook printed copies.

  • Fact's strategy was centered around the download and streaming of exclusive tracks.

  • Every week Fact also offered free mixes by DJs.

  • in 2014 FACT owns the status of  one of the internets most popular music publications , and it owns online TV Channel, FACT TV.

  • In 2007, controversy was caused when Dr Martens placed an advertisement in FACT featuring manipulated photographs of a number of dead rock musicians so that they appeared to be wearing the company's boots in heaven. When families of some of these musicians saw the advert, they reacted angrily, leading Dr Martens to dismiss their advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi.

magzine layouts in shops (analysis and photo)

here is a photo taken in a local convenience shop of the magazine arrangement in the shop, here we can see that the magazines are split into sections being that the more child friendly magazines are lower in order to be seen by younger children between the ages of 3-11 they are both broken up into male and female as well , to right of the children magazines their are colouring books and puzzle book which could also be considered for children , As well as the older generation for passing the time eg) on the bus or in the doctors.

above the children's there are the more teenagers to young adults magazines, eg) fashion and gossip magazines such as heat and look! magazine.these are place in the middle as they would be the first thing seen by teens the height is just eye level for average high of a women.

and at the very top above the gossip and fashion magzine are the mens magazines which include more adult magzines , fitness magzines and gaming magazines typically at the top the more grown magazines are out of sight and mind,of any childrens hands, this is the reson they are place the mens magzine at the very top which i lodgic makes perfect sense.

This magzine display is pretty standard as they are what is expected a magzine layout to be like . the ordering of the magzine sections is cleverly done as i goes up in age from young to older.

research on race stereotyping in the media.

race stereotyping in the media

In the media its ofter that we see some sort of racial stereotyping whether it be in the news , TV shows , movies or even music videos. this stereotype ofter does not reflect as being positive towards the opinions of people or a different race/colour/. Stereotypes are one-dimensional views of people based on race, religion, age, profession, and gender. The inaccuracy of ethnic groups can affect how we perceive one another and relate to one another. Children are especially vulnerable to the media's stereotypes because they have a very limited view of the world.

the following are examples that i found in various media forms and texts in which i think show a negative form of race stereotyping towards race/ethnic groups in the media:

Media Form: TV show

Title : American Horror Story Coven

American horror story coven portrays many different stereotypes such as gender and age but i think race is most frequently used in this particular season of American horror story.
based loosely of the true story of Madame Lalarie , Kathy bates portrays this wicked woman.

This show is based in the 1800s in New Orleans and expresses madame LaLarie to be obsessive. many of the slaves become victims of grotesque experimentation and torture , sole for the fascination of madame LaLarie.

Media form: DVD (film)

title: Django Unchained

In this film slaves are treated like pets and as used for personal desires eg) prostitution and slave trade
this is shown on the clip bellow in the trailer.

Media form: DVD

Title : Disney's Aladdin

Another film that also show a form of race stereotyping is in the popular Disney cartoon 'Alladin' , in this Arabs are portrayed as being thieves and bad people. this is shown in the scene when you see Aladdin in the market not only is the film portraying race it portrays sexism. If you look closely in the film Princess Jasmine is controlled by men in the entire film , while Aladdin is surrounded by belly dancers and is practically worshipped by them, this not only show sexism and objectification but then furthers the representation of Arabs in the media and how they are portrayed to be dominate over there women. giving them no Independence or rights and objectifying them.
